Sustainability at Piikkio Works is built on two key pillars. We design and deliver solutions that help our customers achieve their sustainability goals, while continuously developing our own operations to reduce impact on the climate and the environment, and to support our people.
By developing and utilising more sustainable materials and structures, we can significantly reduce the emissions of our clients’ products. On large cruise ships with thousands of cabins, even small improvements can add up to a major impact.
The Sustainable Cabin concept is a great example of our R&D function’s innovation. Together with our parent company, Meyer Turku, we developed a next-generation cruise cabin where environmental impact is considered throughout the entire lifecycle—from materials and manufacturing to passengers’ everyday choices.
The mock-up cabin acts as a testing platform for future vessels, featuring innovations in materials, energy efficiency, spatial design, ease of installation, and passenger behaviour.
Our production processes and flowline are energy efficient. Most of our forklifts are electric, and our factory logistics train also runs on electricity.
A large share of our energy consumption comes from our facilities. We’ve already taken steps such as transitioning to LED lighting, and further improvements are in progress. We are for example exploring more efficient ways for heating.
With a high volume of materials moving through our factory, reducing waste and material loss is a key focus for us. The amount of waste has been decreasing steadily for years.
As waste has decreased, our recycling rate has increased. We set annual targets for waste reduction and continuously strive to achieve yearly improvements. We have also expanded the use of returnable packaging, with more packaging materials being returned to our suppliers.
At Piikkio Works, building smarter starts with taking care of the people who build. We are committed to continuously improving workplace safety and well-being together with our network. We regularly track our progress using relevant metrics.
Managing our supply chain is essential to us, as a significant share of our products’ value is created within our supplier and partner network. We require our partners to commit to our environmental and social criteria, which we evaluate through regular supplier audits.
We maintain high quality standards for ourselves and our suppliers. Supplier quality is ensured through audits conducted before supplier approval. Products are inspected at supplier premises prior to delivery to the Piikkio Works factory. Critical suppliers are required to provide quality control plans. In addition, selected incoming goods are inspected at the Piikkio Works factory before materials proceed to the flowline.
Each cabin is visually inspected at different quality gates along the flowline. Electrical and pressure tests are carried out on electrical components and systems, and piping. We test all components and devices for functionality. Final quality is confirmed through a comprehensive inspection at the end of the flowline.
Piikkio’s operations comply with all relevant industry standards and certifications, ensuring environmental performance, employee safety, risk management, and compliance with the EU Marine Equipment Directive.
